Cindy Baptista / Visual art and expressive education / 2013
Cindy Baptista’s practice moves between painting, graphic design, and expressive education across Cape Verde, Portugal, and Italy. I shaped the portfolio so a visitor meets the colour and atmosphere first, then can understand the work, its context, and the person behind it without turning the artist into a list of credentials.

connected disciplines
2Visual art and expressive education belong to the same creative practice.

The portfolio problem
Cindy’s work does not sit inside one neat professional label. She is a visual artist, a trained graphic and multimedia designer, and an expressive educator whose projects have involved children, young people, and adults in different cultural contexts. A conventional portfolio could easily split those parts apart or bury the art beneath biography.
The website needed a quieter hierarchy. Paintings should create the first encounter. Essential facts should remain available. Education, exhibitions, and community work should add depth when the visitor is ready for it. The goal was not to explain everything at once, but to make the whole practice feel connected.
The viewing journey
Large artwork and a restrained interface let atmosphere, figures, animals, and dreamlike forms establish identity before explanatory copy begins.
Titles, dates, dimensions, and materials give each painting a stable record that curators, collaborators, and collectors can use.
Exhibitions, expressive education, and contact information reveal the social and professional context around the images.
The digital archive
Social platforms can circulate a painting quickly, but they flatten chronology, crop images, separate captions from context, and make older work difficult to find. The owned site gives Cindy a small archive where each work keeps its name, material, scale, and place in the larger practice.
That archive does not need to become heavy. A simple content structure makes it possible to add a painting or exhibition without redesigning the whole site, while stable URLs allow individual works to be shared directly.
HAAM’s role
HAAM’s role covered portfolio strategy, information architecture, visual and interaction design, responsive implementation, artwork presentation, and the structure connecting Cindy’s paintings, exhibitions, expressive education, and professional contact.

Evidence trail
Data-driven interaction design means the design decision should be traceable upstream. Here is the shortest version of that chain for this project.
01
Artwork records combined titles, years, dimensions, media, exhibitions, education work, and professional context across three countries.
02
The paintings should create the first encounter while exact metadata remains available for practical reference.
03
Lead with artwork, keep structured records attached, and reveal exhibitions, education, and contact as deeper context.
04
The portfolio works both as an art-first experience and as a durable professional archive.
