Hip-Hop

Origin: Bronx, New York

Iconic movement: The Bounce

  1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and keep your knees soft.
  2. Pulse your knees down on each beat while your chest stays relaxed.
  3. Add alternating shoulder drops to groove with the rhythm.

Ballet

Origin: Italian Renaissance courts

Iconic movement: First Position Port de Bras

  1. Turn out both feet to form a gentle V shape from the heels.
  2. Round your arms in front of your torso as if holding a beach ball.
  3. Raise your arms overhead and open them softly to second position.

Salsa

Origin: Cuba & Puerto Rico

Iconic movement: Basic On-1 Step

  1. Step forward with your left foot on count 1.
  2. Return weight to your right foot on count 2 and close on count 3.
  3. Pause on 4, then mirror backward with your right foot on 5-6-7.

Breakdance

Origin: New York street culture

Iconic movement: Toprock 2-Step

  1. Cross your right foot over your left while swinging your opposite arm.
  2. Uncross and reset to center with a bounce.
  3. Repeat to the other side and keep your torso loose and confident.
